Transitioning This Blog

April 23, 2011

Howdy All,

This blog was our first experience with the WordPress format and we have learned a thing ot two since we first set this up. We are going to transition this from a documentation of our December Vinson expedition to a more general blog about all things Mountain Trip. We’ll delete the Vinson posts in the next couple of weeks and make this the dedicated Mountain Trip blog.

Thanks for your patience with our learning curve!!!

At Base Camp!

January 14, 2011

Jacob just called in from Base Camp! The team is relaxing after having a snack and setting up tents. A few are even taking advantage of a NAP ! Tomorrow will be a rest day for the crew. The weather report is of warm temperatures and low winds.

Check back with us for a voice message later this evening.

Summit!

December 27, 2010

Congratulations to Manoj, Eldon, Stephanie, Rich, Isaac and Ariel for having made it to the top of the Antarctic continent! We just got the call from guide, Kevin Koprek, who reported they all were there, “breathless” at the incredible beauty and majesty of the moment. It is a warm, cloudless day. We’ll be posting the team member’s voice message as soon as it is called in.

HOORAY !

December 22, 2010

Happy day after solstice everyone!  We could not see the lunar eclipse here in SW Colorado, due to the fairly serious set of storms that have been hammering us with snow and high winds, but hopefully, some of you did get out to see that historic event.

As those of you who have been following this blog might have picked up on, we set this up “on the fly” when we realized that our old blog format no longer supported audio files.  We’ve been largely pleased with the new WordPress format, but have decided that the better address for this particular blog is http://mountaintripvinson1.wordpress.com/

We have migrated all the posts to the new site and will restructure this particular address after the New Year, so please visit http://mountaintripvinson1.wordpress.com/ to see photos and video that will be posted over the next couple of weeks (our video camera is still in Antarctica with Jacob and Kevin).

Hopefully, you have enjoyed this experience and we encourage all the climbers to post their own versions of the climb via email to Mountain Trip or as comments on the (new address) blog.

Happy holidays!

Dec.14th- Back at Base Camp

December 14, 2010

Roman makes the daily blog report for the 14th from BAse Camp.  Roman, Chuck, Patrick and Mountain Trip guide Kevin, began the day at high camp, descended the fixed lines, picked up some gear at Camp One and went all the way to Base Camp.  They would have flown to Union Glacier, but the winds picked up and stopped that plan.  They’re looking to fly tomorrow, enjoy a day at UG, then catch their scheduled  (but still weather-dependent) flight to Punta Arenas.

Yet Another Summit!

December 13, 2010

Kevin called just now from the summit of Mount Vinson!

He, Roman, Patrick and Chuck headed up this morning under a sunny sky, but were soon buffeted by high winds, as they made their way toward the summit.  Conditions improved somewhat as they got higher on the long plateau leading to the top, but it was still quite windy when he called.  It was a long, hard day, but everyone did really well.

They plan to head down to Base Camp tomorrow.  Good work everyone!!!

Here is the podcast called in by Kevin and Chuck:

On The Move!

December 13, 2010

Bill called this morning from the Union Glacier.  He said Roman, Patrick, Chuck and Kevin are all headed for the summit!

Terry, Albert and Jacob are all headed back to Base Camp and are scheduled to fly straight to the Union Glacier (weather permitting), so that they can board an Ilyushin flight for Punta Arenas tonight!  Wow- it’s kind of hard to imagine heading from high camp on Vinson to Punta Arenas in the same day, but the weather has been pretty marginal for flying to and from the Ice, so they need to jump on the flight, if it is at all possible. They would join Ephi, Neil and Bill on the flight.

The plan is for Kevin’s crew to descend to Base Camp tomorrow to catch their scheduled flight back on the 16th.  First, however, they need to focus on looking after themselves as they push for the summit.  We’ll keep you posted as the day progresses.

Stay tuned…
